The 2024 Blogtober Playlist has a very lunar vibe, if not one wrapped a little more tightly in sorcery than science.

It attempts to pay homage to the entire month as opposed to just its spookier components, and definitely enhances an October night without going too dark.
Putting together (sorry, curating) a unique, October-themed playlist every year isn’t something I’d call a daunting task, but it does get harder to avoid duplicate songs as time goes on. That’s where a good cover sometimes surfaces; this year, Creedence Clearwater’s I Put A Spell On You fit the mix (Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ original and The Kills’ version have appeared on Blogtober lists of the past), as did Nouvelle Vague’s version of Echo & the Bunnymen’s The Killing Moon.
There are a few new song additions made by artists who already make repeat appearances on the Blogtober master list — Alanis Morrissette, Florence + the Machine, and Fleetwood Mac among them.
Folk-singer Laura Marling joins for the first time with Devil’s Resting Place, as does Shinyribs with my new favorite tune, Who Built The Moon. I think this is Cher’s first rodeo, too.
All in all, this year’s list includes 15 songs, runs 59 minutes, and with just one E-for-explicit track (Qveen Herby’s RIP), is fairly safe for work.

The Blogtober Master List is about 12 hours of fall-and-fear-inspired tuneage. In terms of playlists, it leans more toward “Deathly Deepcuts” than “Halloween Hootenanny,” but the lens is broad and it’s updated annually with a new, lightly themed list of songs.

Need Less?
Only have time for two? Try one of these couplets from this year’s list:
- Dark Lady + Which Witch
- Devil’s Resting Place + Fortune Teller
- Blood Makes Noise + Trigger Happy Jack
- No Return + The Killing Moon (both feature in the tv show Yellowjackets, along with the original version of No Return by Craig Wedren and Anna Waronker, and the original The Killing Moon by Echo & the Bunnymen).
